The Biologists at the Design Table (BaDT) training teaches biologists how to help designers, architects, engineers, and business people create a more sustainable world, simply by tapping their knowledge of the natural world in a new and compelling way.

COURSE CONTENT

What you'll learn:

  • A proven method for bringing nature's ideas to the design table
  • Introduction to the design process
  • How to apply biological knowledge to design challenges
  • Examples of biomimetic success stories
  • How to facilitate biomimetic design
  • A whole new way of viewing and valuing the natural and built worlds

What you'll do:

  • Practice applying the tools of biomimicry in a real world scenario
  • Explore nature's genius through field-based activities
  • Solve design challenges by asking, "How would nature do this?"
  • Become acquainted with life's inherently sustainable design principles

Workshop Logistics:

This innovative and exciting training is open to biologists, ecologists and naturalists with a passion for the natural world, an understanding of sustainability, and an interest in applying nature's elegant design strategies to human design challenges.

Biomimicry Guild and Biomimicry Institute staff with years of experience working with clients, lecturing and teaching world-wide, and, most importantly, learning from nature, lead this seven day training. Janine Benyus and Dayna Baumeister, co-founders of the Biomimicry Guild, are guest teachers at this course. Come learn with the best of the best!

A rigorous application process helps us select course candidates with a broad understanding of biology, an interdisciplinary mindset, and an ability to research and translate biological concepts for a non-technical audience. Our application process is designed to ensure that the training and your background and skill set are a good fit. For an example of our application questions, please see BaDT training application 2008 (PDF 78 kb).

Many graduates of previous BaDT workshops have found or created applicable biomimetic work or have pursued innovative graduate study following their attendance. Our 2009 BaDT training is the 6th of its kind and is tentatively planned for fall. This course is projected to cost between $900 - 1500, which includes tuition, materials, room, board, and ground transportation from the airport to the venue.

BIOLOGISTS WHO TALK YOUR LANGUAGE

Our work is deeply rooted in solid science, but it’s our job to translate that science so you can immediately make the link to your design challenge.

DO YOU NEED SOMEONE TO SPEAK AT YOUR ORGANIZATION's MEETING OR CONFERENCE?

birds feedingThe Biomimicry Guild has a wide range of experienced speakers to talk to your organization about the potential of Biomimicry and the methods of implementing Biomimicry ideas. For more information and to request a speaker, please fill out our Speaker Request Form.

Current Guild speaking engagements open to the public.
